How This ‘Device’ Works — Bernat Casasnovas
I have worked alongside the ConceptD Creator Line to render my own dream gadget in a piece called ‘Device’ — this is where the idea came from.

‘Device’ — my most recent passion project — is a short 3D piece depicting a mysterious gadget in the shape of a letter ‘D’. It invites the viewer to ponder the purpose of such a new-fangled gizmo, while (hopefully) making them appreciate the different textures and visual allusions of the piece.
Before making the piece, I had been researching a number of different devices and high-tech models, and I guess the synthesized aesthetics and presentation methods of the unveiling aspect for a new device informed my creative process.

Further inspiration was found in my partner for the project, ConceptD, and their ConceptD 700 Creator Desktop — the clean lines and modern appearance of which I tried to reflect in my rendering.
To make the piece, I drew on some of my past experiences as well; a long time ago I worked on a project involving the creation of a robot, which came in handy. Even with this advantage though, the project still presented difficulties, as modeling the ‘D’ in the perfect, almost automatized way I intended took a lot of work. To achieve perfect curves, sleek lines and keenly rendered quads a lot of time was spent compositing the ‘D’ in AfterEffects to get it just right.
Besides modeling, which is always of upmost importance to 3D artists, the movement of the piece was crucial to its success. As mentioned, I had been inspired by the unveiling of high-tech gadgets, so I wanted my piece to build to an unveiling of this modern ‘D’ device.
To make these movements and transitions go as smoothly as possible, it was important to get the work right on Cinema4d and Octane Render. To make the ‘D’ pop, I spent a lot of time tweaking the lighting, and applying a finishing gloss to the model in ZBrush, to give it that futuristic, cutting edge, look.
Ultimately, what we are left with is an attempt by me as a 3D artist to express clean lines and smooth textures in an epic way; epic not only because of the slow build and reveal of a new ‘Device’, but also because this mysterious ‘D’ taps into the emotive feelings we have around technology and its uses by asking the audience to imagine what a ‘D’ can be used for.
